With support from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC), Project Surakshit, was implemented by Centre for Knowledge and Development (CKD), which focused on organizing of Health Screening, eye check-up camps along with learning sessions for children (1-6 years old) with special needs in Morna, Noida, NCR. Detailed clinical assessment was done for each child with disability/neurological disorder, and a home plan was provided that included detailed activities with pictures/videos and supported by a month long follow up via 2 online sessions.
The urban slums of Morna have multiple health concerns, due to poor sanitation, lack of safe drinking water, poor ventilation, large-size families living in unhygienic conditions. The focus was on mobilizing the community to have health seeking behaviour. The project aimed to generate awareness through health camps, on importance of a healthy life, emphasizing on the need for preventive health care practices, for improved health outcomes. Therefore, the project aimed increase access to healthcare for vulnerable communities, by conducting health screening camps and distributing need-based products. The project was planned in close collaboration with the office of the Chief Medical Officer, Noida. CKD collaborated with agencies and medical experts in areas of general physical health, mental health and ophthalmology to assist with the provision of health personnel to conduct screening camps.
IEC materials were created to facilitate outreach and raise awareness for the health screening camp, providing the community with essential information on general health, eye health, and mental well-being. Mobilization efforts targeted key touchpoints including Anganwadis, local healthcare centers, and educational institutions.
The project partners, Centre for Knowledge and Development (CKD) partnered with Healing Nest Foundation, Netram Eye Foundation, MERADOC and OSVI Healthcare and ensured specialized inputs in the health camps. Free health and eye check-up camps were organized in Morna, Noida, on 23rd, 24th and 29th February 2024. Children with special needs were also assessed, and parental guidance was given during the camp. More than 900 people went through health screening; 150 people were given free spectacles, and 150 senior citizens were given free supplements/medicines.
The AWWs, ASHAs and community leaders mobilized the community members to come for the check-ups. The school principals and teachers also participated enthusiastically. Aligned with CKD’s vision, the camp prioritized women, elderly, adolescents and special needs children. It was observed that women have got health check-ups done during their pregnancy period in the past, and there has been a noticeable lapse in attending general health check-ups since that time. Women were found to have poor health seeking behavior.
